How to Create a Colorful Christmas Tree with Ribbon and Ornaments

If you follow me on Instagram or any of my social channels, you know it’s no secret that Christmas is my favorite holiday. Everything from the Christmas music, to sending out cards, baking, and now that I’m a mom even playing Santa with my husband just excites me and warms my heart. I also love designing a beautiful and colorful Christmas tree for our home. One of my hacks is to use a variety of ornaments to create a colorful Christmas tree, but adding ribbon just puts the icing on the cake. If you love making a beautiful tree for the holidays, this one is for you!

Find a great quality tree.

No matter whether you go with a real or faux tree, make sure it’s great quality. I love a good faux tree because I don’t have to worry about watering it and if you want to make a really colorful Christmas tree faux trees come in all kinds of colors from white, to red, and even black! My family owns this gorgeous flocked tree we got from King of Christmas and you can check out my post on steps to decorate a glam tree if you’re looking for other Flocked Christmas tree decorating ideas here!

Think Complementary for a Colorful Christmas Tree!

When deciding on ribbon and ornaments, think of a color scheme that will be complementary. For example, with a flocked tree, there’s a lot of white flock. Having too much silver or white won’t be complementary and will wash out your tree. Using bold colors in ribbons with wire and ornaments will undoubtedly create the colorful Christmas Tree you’re looking for. Some great ideas for complimentary color schemes on a Christmas tree are:

  • red and gold

  • gold and navy

  • navy and pink

Choose bold and unique ornaments.

After you’ve chosen your color palette getting your ornaments on standby is key. They’re always the best part! Get ornaments in various sizes and shapes to add depth to your tree.

The question I’m asked most often is where I get my ornaments and here is my secret: I GET THEM FROM ANYWHERE! I love a high end look to my tree but don’t love spending beyond my budget, so I mix “highs” and “lows”. I find ornaments at any place from Macy’s to Michael’s, Target and even Neiman Marcus. I recommend shopping during sales to get the best value for your dollar. Shopping pre-Thanksgiving sales, Black Friday sales, and even after Christmas gets you the best bang for your buck!

Always add ribbons with wire to accessorize your colorful Christmas Tree!

As a kid, I loved a good ole’ tinsel garland on my tree. For me now, ribbon adds a touch of elegance to a Christmas tree. Things like beads, different kinds of tree picks, feathers, and crystal also add a nice elegant touch. My go-to rules for using ribbons on my tree are:

  • Using at least 2 different colors of wired ribbon

  • Having at least 2 different widths of ribbon to layer

  • Cutting strips in different lengths of 4” 6” and 12” (for a 9 ft. tree)

  • Placing each ribbon in varying angles throughout the tree for a “woven throughout” look
