How to Create Amazing Fall Scents in Your Home
I’m a stickler for making sure my home always smells so good, and I’m especially particular when it comes to scents as soon as fall hits. I’m so ready for the smells of sweet cinnamon, warm pumpkin spice and crisp apple cider. They’re classic scents that linger a nostalgic memory of falls past. You probably love hitting up the popular stores that sell expensive candles to fill your home with the warm, comforting smells of fall, but you can actually create your own fall scents the all natural way!
Candles and things like wax melts can get expensive, plus some of them, specifically those not made from soy or beeswax, may contain ingredients that aren’t whole and may be toxic. Luckily, there are some really easy and frugal ways to help get your home smelling like the warm, cozy feel of fall.
Here are 5 easy ways to create natural fall scents, inside your home:
First up, Essential Oils
Essential oils are incredibly trendy right now, and almost everybody who uses them has their go-to brand. The brand doesn’t necessarily matter, but they all usually will have your favorite fall smelling essential oils. My favorites include clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Here’s how to use essential oils to scent a room- create a linen spray.
Seriously, this trick will not only have your house smelling great because it’s the best air freshener for the house, but it also provides some antimicrobial properties to help fight the odor-causing bacteria at the same time! It’s a win-win!
You can create your own linen spray by mixing 1 part water and 1 part vodka plus your favorite essential oils. The Wellness Momma has a great step by step tutorial to help you out here.
If you want to go the easy route, just throw some essential oils into a diffuser. It will give your house a cozy fall scent within just a few minutes!
NOTE: If you’re pregnant, do some research on which essential oils are safe for you to use. I steered clear of any that seemed to have any documented evidence of possibly starting early labor.
Option #2, Make a Homemade Simmer Pot
I remember back in the day when I was younger, my mom was obsessed with her potpourri pot and it was a hot thing back then (no pun intended LOL). These days, we’re calling them simmer pots. You’ve probably seen this idea floating around on Pinterest, and it’s great.
A simmer pot is a good way to get a more natural apple-cinnamon scent into your home without the use of any chemicals.
Simply fill a pot with water and place peels of apples, oranges, cinnamon sticks, and vanilla into the water. You can even add nutmeg and lemon peels too. Simmer it for as long as you want to help keep the smell dispersed throughout your home.
Obviously, you’ll need to keep a close eye on the liquid levels so that it doesn’t burn out and scorch the pot. If you’re worried about the electricity bill or keeping an eye on the liquid, you can try this in your crockpot with the lid off. It will draw less power than the stove and can give you greater peace of mind while still giving you the great fall scents that you’re looking for.
Option #3 Hide the Rosemary
If you’re looking for a really good natural air freshener for the bathroom, this could be it! There is no effort needed. Simply take some sprigs of rosemary and hide it in random places throughout the home. You can also take a small sash and fill it with rosemary to keep inside your drawers.
You might even consider buying some soy-made fall candles to keep in the bathroom, just for the luxurious feeling of lighting one while you enjoy a bubble bath.
Option #4 Bake a Pie
You can’t deny how good a house smells when you bake a pie! The sweet smell of a home made sweet potato pie made with sugar, butter, vanilla, spices, and a flaky crust will easily remind you of grandmas house at Thanksgiving. If you aren’t a baker, that’s totally ok! The grocery stores often sell frozen pies that you can just take and bake. It gives you the same effect, the same scent, and it’s hassle free!
Option #5, Cinnamon Brooms
Have you ever bought a cinnamon broom? They’re always sold in grocery stores during the fall season, they’re inexpensive, and you can place them anywhere to get a bold cinnamon smell throughout your house. I’ve often used them in the kitchen and the powder room at home.
With any of these natural ways to make your home smell like fall, your house will definitely be the spot for all the upcoming holidays and you’ll know you did it all by yourself - all natural!
